Creating habitat for Bats, Birds, Bees & Butterflies in Hove.

Phase 1 of rewilding begins at Carlton Hill Primary School in Hove, thanks to the tremendous support of the Enjoolata Foundation.

How extraordinary to find out that tucked away in a corner of the school grounds are a resident population of bats! This discovery inspires the creation of a new moth garden and the extension of rank grasslands to boost moth and invertebrate species. Furthermore, butterfly walks, new hedgerows and mini orchards are just some of the initiatives that are also being launched within the school grounds this year to support the resident wildlife in this urban setting.

I cannot tell you how overjoyed I was to hear from Jimmy, the school’s grounds manager, that he also regularly sees foxes passing through, as well as a good number of resident birds - all hanging on and surviving in this little oasis in the centre of a busy town. We will now work to boost and support these wildlife populations further, through rewilding options that will both create new habitats and enhance the existing ones at Carlton Hill Primary school.
